Really hoping they expand on the worldbuilding and the story more in DLC or sequels without over-explaining anything.“Blasphemous” is a 2D action-platformer game set in a dark fantasy world called Cvstodia, where the player takes on the role of The Penitent One, a lone warrior on a quest to rid the land of the curse that plagues it. Like if the trinity put the Holy Spirit first, then Christ second, then totally just kind of hand-waved the "God" part. People worship an event, a process, instead of a divinity. The game has all these Spanish Baroque Catholic trappings, but they really did a neat thing - they changed the inner workings of the whole Cvstodia religion. Also, that throne is in the Desambulatory (the place Deogracias calls the "Cradle of affliction"), whereas the first miracle is in the Knot of Three Words. In the game, Escribar says "The miracle has forsaken us, and my ornate throne turns its back on those who await here." So we know that's a separate event from the Twisted One's backstory. Eventually he grew into a tree, the tree was set on fire, and the ashes turned people into monsters. The lore from early development of the game (back when they were still calling it "Orthodoxia") suggests that the "grievous miracle" (the one that caused all the monsters and all) took place when the High Pontiff turned his throne around out of disappointment in his followers not being devout enough and just ignored everyone for years. I guess that's why it's called Blasphemous is because you're committing blasphemy against Escribar and his followers, but you're the true messiah I guess, and your penance is a test of your worthiness. I'm guessing The Miracle is some kind of entity since Escribar is the Last Son of The Miracle. The other two put their faith in him as a mortal capable of leading the faith but he used it to abuse them and make them suffer. I'm going off context and a lot of guesswork, but it seems like the only bad one is Escribar. That's why The High Wills will bless your items through the woman in the dream and The Miracle allows you to reclaim your guilt and is what resurrected you in the first place and resurrects you whenever you fail in your penance. I think it could be like a Holy Trinity type deal with The High Wills, The Miracle, and The Messiah, but the other two have cut ties to The Messiah because of his abusive nature, so they support The Penitent One in his journey to take him down. After doing so, he is chosen by the Miracle to be its new messiah, the new Twisted One (as seen in the good ending) and presumably leads Custodia into a new age of peace and prosperity.Įdit: The Miracle is the mutual feeling of every denisen of Custodia, not the divine force itself - that is called the High Wills.Įdit 2: It's also entirely possible that the divine force IS the Miracle, and that "the High Wills" refers to Escribar and his congregation However, one of them survived (or was resurrected) and went on to finish the mission, guided by Deogracias. Upon learning this, he killed the entire Brotherhood with the wardens you fight at the very beginning and at the Wall of Holy Prohibitions. Likewise, it severed its contact with Escribar, imprisoned him and turned all of his followers into hideous abominations (it's possible that it stopped communicating with Escribar when it saw how he imposed its will, even before all this happened).įor a reason I have yet to discover, the aforementioned execution of Escribar has been entrusted to the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow. Once again, it answered, turning her statue of the Twisted One into the sword Mea Culpa - a sign that the current messiah must be executed - and plunging all of Custodia into that same state of guilt and sorrow. His mother, upon seeing her son's actions, wracked with guilt and sorrow, prayed to the miracle for penance. However, based on the various bones you collect and the spirits you communicate with throughout the game, you see that Escribar imposed a tyrannical rule, mercilessly killing anyone who didn't follow his orders, many of which were downright insane. Finally, after much time, seeing the boy's devotion and humbleness, the Miracle answered and turned the boy into its messiah - the Twisted One. I have yet to gather all the details, but this is my attempt to explain the main story based on what I've gathered so far.Ī young boy sat on the stump in the Knot of the Three Words, praying to the Miracle for punishment.
